Jacob Garrett and Thomas McHugh - Zachary High School
Yesterday I did private lessons with Jacob Garrett and Thomas McHugh of Zachary High School in Louisiana. Jacob will be a senior kicker in the fall while Thomas will be a junior.
Last week, Thomas came over to New Orleans for a one on one session. We got a lot accomplished during our session and he left with some things to work on. I could see Thomas worked hard on those things all week. He cleaned up some minor issues with his footwork, and it showed. He’s still not all the way there yet, but is getting close. Because he’s a mechanically sound kicker now, he consistently puts the ball on target. Very rarely does Thomas miss the ball to the left or right of the uprights.
Yesterday was my first time working with Jacob. I think he now has a good understanding of his kicking style and what he needs to do to become a great kicker. Throughout our session, I tried to get Jacob to stay back a little longer behind the ball with his eyes while encouraging him to continue swinging up. It slowly started to click for him more and more as the workout went on. He showed the ability to hit some big field goals with great height and distance.
We finished the field goal portion of our workout by competing with game situation kicks. Both of these guys did an awesome job with one winning the first round and the other the second. These two enjoy competing with and pushing each other to get better. I believe both of them can become very good kickers for their school this upcoming season!
Alexi Johnson, Shakopee High School
Yesterday I did a private kicking lesson in the Minneapolis area with Alexi Johnson of Shakopee High School. Alexi will be a senior kicker this fall for his team. After attending my Performance Kicking event in January, he wanted to get together for a one on one lesson as well. Alexi is a fundamentally sound kicker who consistently makes his kicks. He also does a great job with steps and footwork. During our field goal session yesterday, Alexi got into the rhythm and hit a dozen kicks in a row right down the middle from various distances. Every once and awhile, Alexi’s soccer swing will want to come out. I asked him to focus on swinging up and through his kick while holding his eyes back. That’s when his ball jumped up with great height and had distance on it! Overall, Alexi had a good day kicking. He is a very smooth field goal kicker and has the ability to develop into a great kickoff guy as well. He now knows what he needs to do to take his kickoffs to the next level. He will be a guy to watch come fall!
Parker Geffre - Simmons Middle School, Aberdeen SD
Today I did a private lesson with a young kicker in my hometown of Aberdeen. Parker is a 12 year old that wanted to give kicking and punting a try. He’s a big, strong boy for someone his age! Parker was eager to learn and did a great job of taking instruction and translating it over to his kicking.
Parker felt most comfortable as a straight on kicker, so that’s what we worked on. After focusing on swinging “up and through” the ball, Parker began hitting a higher, straighter ball. During our field goal session, he hit 20 of 24 field goals from extra point range and beyond. This is very good for someone his age. I challenged Parker towards the end and he responded by drilling a 28-yard field goal into a slight breeze.
Overall, Parker had a great day kicking. I hope he decides to stick with it. He has taken advantage of getting some instruction at a young age and has the ability to develop into a great kicker in the years to come. I hope to see him kicking on Swisher Field someday in the blue and gold!
Small Group lessons in Volga, South Dakota Specialists
I recently did a private small group lesson with three specialists from Volga, South Dakota. One of them was Thayer Trenhaile, who will be a senior snapper this season. Thayer is also a member of the TMKicking 2013 Top Prospect list. The two other specialists were sophomore kicker Trevor Lundin and 8th grade punter Nathaniel Algood. All three of these guys had great days at their respected positions.
After getting loose, Thayer continued to show why he might be the best snapper in the state of South Dakota heading into next season. Thayer is a very fundamentally sound snapper with a great work ethic. He has good speed on his punt snaps hitting routinely at .7 seconds or under. He was also a very consistent on his short snaps. I challenged Thayer to continue what he’s doing with his snapping and strive to become a bigger, faster, and stronger snapper.
Both Trevor and Nathaniel displayed the ability to hit some very good balls. Trevor did a great job of simply making his kicks. From 35 yards and in, Trevor is a very reliable kicker and will be a great asset to his team this fall. As he continues to develop and get stronger, he will have the opportunity to become a great field goal kicker.
Nathaniel really surprised me halfway through our punting workout. After talking about instruction and going through a series of drills, Nathaniel slowly began to hit bigger and better punts. Towards the end of the workout, he was hitting some very impressive balls for a punter his age. If he continues to work hard at developing his punting skill, he will be a very good punter in the years to come.
This was a great group of guys to work with. They were all eager to learn and want to show everyone they are going to be a respectable unit who can be counted on by their team all fall! Good luck guys!
